LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM

So far we talked about air cooling system: How it works, components of it, why do we need fins.., In this post we will talk about liquid cooling system almost every automobile using. Before get into working I wanna let you know all the components of liquid cooling system. 

Liquid cooling system:  A liquid (coolant) is circulated around the cylinders and absorb heat from the cylinder walls and cylinder head. 

Now the components of LCS : 

1. Coolant: It is a mixture of antifreeze and water. We also add corrosion inhibitors to help protect vehicle’s Radiator which often contain a electrochemically incompatible metals. ANTIFREEZE is an additive which lowers the freezing point of H2O based liquid and increases its boiling point. Most using antifreeze are ETHYLENE GLYCOL, PROPYLENE GLYCOL which also lubricate the pump seal, reduce corrosion.

RADIATOR: Heat exchanger that removes heat from the coolant passing through it. It consists of 3 main parts: 1) upper tank 2) Lower tank 3) Tubes. 

H2O from the upper tank, which comes from the engine, flows downwards through the tubes. The heat contained in the hot H2O is conducted to the copper fins provided around the tubes. When the H2O is flowing through the radiator core, it is cooled partially by the fan which blows air and partially by the air flow developed by the forward motion of the vehicle.
Generally radiators are made up of copper and brass and their joints are made by soldering. Depending upon alignment of tubes radiators are of horizontal and vertical types.
